One performance, two games, six kinds of classic teas, a room full of teachers and students—all smiling, all sipping. These numbers painted the liveliest snapshot of “A Sip of Chinese Aroma,”the foreign-teacher tea gathering held at Guangzhou College of Commerce on 11 December. Associate Professor Huang Mingzhu (Deputy Director of the International Office & Deputy Director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office) and faculty and students from relevant schools shared an immersive afternoon over steaming cups.
Huang Mingzhu first conveyed Vice President Zhou Peng’s regards and best wishes to the foreign teachers. Then, using the teaware on the table as her starting point, she gave a short but vivid lesson on Chinese etiquette.
“Look,” she said,“a cup is filled only seven-tenths full; that is the Chinese way of leaving room for thoughtfulness. And this teapot holds enough to pour one round for everyone—an expression of sharing and completeness.” While speaking, she demonstrated the “finger-knock salute”: the way you tap your fingers changes with the status of the person you face—one finger for a junior, two for a peer, a lightly clenched fist for an elder. This graceful body language immediately fascinated the guests and was practiced again and again as the tea was served, becoming a silent, heart-warming scene of mutual understanding. “We hope that through sincere, cross-cultural moments like this, every gathering becomes an opportunity to deepen appreciation of Chinese culture and to strengthen our friendship,” Huang said in her remarks.
As the session unfolded, the teachers moved from observers to participants. Guided by International Officer Huang Yanjun, they traced the history of Chinese tea culture and, by looking at dry leaves, liquor and smelling aroma, discovered the distinctive charm of China’s six major tea types. Matias Lorieri, after sampling several teas, fell in love with ripe pu-er and Dancong. “Many people say drinking tea at night hard to fall asleep, but I don’t have that troubles. Ilike brewing a pot at night—it calms me completely,” he said. Michael Max Winter from the U.K. found both familiarity and novelty in black tea: “It reminds me of home, yet it’s entirely different—a perfect doorway into the Chinese tea world.”
Next, International Officer Shou Suyan performed a seamless demonstration of Chinese tea art. The surprise came when Pascal Arian Gondokusumo was invited on stage to brew a full pot under her guidance. Warming the pot, adding leaves, pouring water, decanting—he could hardly hide his excitement afterwards: “That was so much fun! I’m going to buy a tea set for home and brew it myself.”
Interactive games pushed the atmosphere to its peak. The tension of “pass the flower while the drum beats” and the fun of “pick by number” complemented each other; Chinese and foreign teachers and studentsanswered enthusiastically. At the close, everyone thanked one another with the newly learned finger-tap, a small gesture that became the unspoken punctuation mark of the day. “Today let our foreign teachers experience Chinese tea culture,” one student volunteer summed up, “and let us gain friendship and grow through serving and talking.”
The tea gathering liked a open window, allowing Chinese and foreign teachers and students alike to jionly learnthe charm of Chinese tea culture, experiencing a literary gathering from the classical Chinese style. More than that, it served as an invisible bridge, quietly drawing hearts closer throughtea and laughter, adding a warm and vibrant splash of colour to the international campus of Guangzhou College of Commerce.
